Athos: The Return
War of Failed Succession
Excerpted from the Encyclopaedia Athorium
Called the Great War by common folk, it is the cataclysmic twelve year war between the Noxarii and the Athosians between 1040 and 1052. During the war nearly 3/5ths of the global population was eradicated. The war began when The Reckoning occurred and left barren the continent of Sysitar. Not a day after the island’s destruction, several of the demigods defied their father’s commands to remain apart from the world and, under the leadership of Vinsanthius, The Shimmering Blade, poured down from Heaven and engaged the Noxarii. For a year, the demigods did battle, scarring the land and leaving behind destruction in their paths. Then, in 1041, the Shadar-Kai were unleashed by Nox and were ordered to subjugate the races of the Earth. The Athosians then called the races together and began the war’s decade long Second Period. When the unified peoples were able to push the Shadar-Kai into the Andarii and were close to victory, Nox brought himself to the gates of Heaven and was defeated by Athos, since it is known that Nox was thrown from the gates and disappeared. The final year of the war was spent cleaning up the remaining forces loyal to the fallen demigod. The results of the war being the establishment of The Conclave, the recession of the demigods from extreme interference in mortal affairs, and the establishment of the Athosian Races as the dominant groups over the Realm Between.
The First Period
The Second Period
The demigods, in an effort to stop the Shadar-Kai advance, scattered themselves across the known Realm and attempted to protect the mortals against them. But they were quickly overwhelmed. It was then that Men, Orcs, Elves, and Dwarves banded together and rallied themselves to fight for their survival. At The First Battle of the Xenospoint the forces of Athos clashed with the Shadar-Kai on the lower plateau of Grashnak. The vanguard of Orcs and Men charged full on and completely broke the lines of their enemies, scattering their forces across the island. For a year, the unified forces fought the armies of the Shadar-Kai until they were forced to retreat. They fled to the shores where they intended to regroup, but at The Battle of Torrentia Harbour they were caught off guard and their fleet was scattered. In the resulting chaos the forces split and fled to Athos Terrarum, Brimir, and Elandir.
It was then that the races separated and left to fight the war in their own respective lands.
